The Cushnie et Ochs Spring 2018 Collection is inspired by the life of Mexican painter, Frida Kahlo, and references the work of Spanish artist, Ernesto Artillo. Silhouettes such as exaggerated square necklines and billowing sleeves reflect Frida’s mixed European/Mexican heritage- juxtaposing influences which are famously depicted in Frida’s painting “Las Dos Fridas.”

This idea is also conveyed through the mixing of fabrics, materials and colors. Corsetry is subtly woven throughout the collection -boning details are present across an array of structured bodysuits, jumpsuits, dresses and pants. Matte satin ribbon creates visual interestdraping across necklines, around waistlines, and over the shoulder to the floor. A vivid, passionate color palette clashes together, contrasted by various shapes and angles – a visual that is informed by the vibrant aesthetic of Mexican architect, Luis Barragán.

Print is also at the forefront this season- with oversized, abstract florals seen in printed fabrics, and then further developed into 3-D embellishment and embroidery. These details are a nod to the cut-and-paste, abstract and surrealist floral techniques of artist Ernesto Artillo. The Spring 2018 season marks the debut of Cushnie et Ochs Footwear, and it celebrates the second season of Cushnie et Ochs Handbags - introducing the new mini iteration of the classic “James Satchel” in varying fabrications and color.
